Let's not kid ourselves, though: bread CAN make you fat—that is if you smother it with sugar-filled condiments, cheese and high-fat spreads (Nutella, peanut butter, etc.)
To clear up the rumors once and for all: by itself, bread is much less caloric than a dessert, for example. It would be a shame to deprive yourself of it for life... You can have your bread and eat it, too. Just do so sparingly.
