Back in the day, doggie bags weren't a thing in France because a) the portions weren't big enough to merit one and b) it was considered bad manners. We still wouldn't recommend asking for a doggie bag at a gastronomic restaurant in Paris, but if you're eating at a more modern neo-bistro or eatery, wouldn't you want the option of taking the rest of your enormous, juicy steak-frites home with you? Now you can. Restaurants are now encouraged (though not required) to offer le "doggy bag" or le "gourmet bag" to customers who don't finish their meals.
