Lutefisk
This Nordic fish dish is in plain terms dried cod that soaks in lye solution for several days in order to rehydrate it. To prepare, it is rinsed under cold water and either boiled or baked. It is often served with boiled potatoes, melted butter and various side dishes in both Sweden and Norway and sometimes in the US. Although it's widely known for its horrible smell, the taste is surprisingly mild, when prepared properly.
