Poutine
This traditional French-Canadian dish comes from Quebec, Canada. Even if your dad is a diehard Amerian patriot, he'll be hard-pressed to deny a pile of fries topped with cheese curds and gravy...
This is a 3-part recipe:
The cheese curds are probably the most complicated ingredient. You might have to do a little searching to find them, possibly at a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, if there is one nearby.
To make the gravy, dissolve 2 tablespoons cornstarch in water. Put aside. Melt 6 tablespoons unsalted butter in a saucepan, add 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and cook for 5 minutes. Stir continuously until golden brown. Add 2 minced garlic cloves, and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in 2 cans of beef broth, and bring the ingredients to a boil, using a wire whisk for stirring. Add the dissolved cornstarch, and reduce heat to a simmer for 3 to 5 minutes or until the gravy has thickened. Season to taste.
Then go ahead and make an appetizing mess, layering the cheese curds over the fries and drizzling (or drenching) everything in the gravy.
