A Guide To Choosing The Best Fruits And Veggies At Your Farmer's Market

General Guidelines

Finally, here are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind when poring over the stands at your local farmer's market:

1. Avoid fruits and veggies that have dents, large bruises, or pierced or broken skin.

2. Try to steer clear of the extreme ends of the firmness spectrum.  Too soft or wilted means the produce is past its prime, while items that are as hard as rocks might take ages to ripen, if they ever do.

3. Fruits and vegetables that feel heavy for their size are generally the juiciest.

4. Use your nose!  If you let your instincts guide you, you'll usually find your way to the freshest, most delicious produce available.
