What causes the string of bubbles in a Champagne glass?
Scientists have found that imperfections such as the microscopic fibers left by a kitchen towel or even airborne particles are responsible for the streams of bubbles that rise from particular parts of a Champagne flute. Too clean and you won't have as many bubbles! These days, some top glass makers intentionally form imperfections at the bottom of the glass using a laser, so that the molecules of carbon dioxide gather there and form bubbles.
