You don't have to like getting caught in the rain to enjoy a Piña Colada, but it probably helps. Literally a 'strained pineapple' drink, the sweet cocktail came to American via Puerto Rico, and with decidedly swashbuckling origins. The drink first appeared in history books when 19th century pirate Roberto Cofresí gave his demoralized crew a beverage that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum. The modern drink was a sleeper hit in the U.S until the late 1970's (thanks to a certain song), but discerning travelers visiting Puerto Rico in the 1950's would have enjoyed sipping the cool, tropical drink.
